Fat Biking in Stowe: Your Winter Ride Beyond the Slopes

Ski days get all the glory—but in Stowe, winter doesn’t end when you step out of your bindings. If you’re looking for a fresh way to explore the valley (and laugh more than you expected), fat biking is one of the most fun, approachable winter adventures around.

Fat bikes are built with extra-wide tires that “float” over packed snow, turning snowy trails and groomed paths into a rideable playground. Think: the simple joy of riding a bike, upgraded for winter—quiet forests, fresh air, and a totally different view of Stowe.

What makes fat biking so fun?

Fat biking feels surprisingly intuitive, even for first-timers. You don’t need to be an expert mountain biker to enjoy it—especially if you start on flatter terrain like the Stowe Recreation Path, which is a popular beginner-friendly option.

It’s also a great “Plan B” activity when conditions aren’t ideal on the mountain—fat biking can actually shine when skiing and riding aren’t at their peak.

Where to ride near Stowe

One of the best parts about fat biking here is the variety: mellow, scenic routes for easy cruising, plus more adventurous singletrack for riders who want a little spice.

Local favorites include:

  • Stowe Recreation Path (beginner-friendly, accessible grades)
  • Cady Hill Forest (singletrack network close to town)
  • Edson Hill (known for motorized grooming)
  • Cotton Brook
  • Sterling Forest options like Callaghy’s Trail and Split Rock
  • VAST trails on state forest land (great for exploring, with the important note to yield appropriately where snowmobiles are present)

A key heads-up: not every trail that’s open in winter allows fat bikes, and restrictions can change with conditions—so check the latest trail status before you roll.

Want something longer and flatter for a steady cruise? The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is a four-season, multi-use corridor with accessible grades, and it’s a great place to try fat biking.

Rentals, demos, and guided tours

No fat bike? No problem. Stowe has excellent local shops that can set you up with rentals (and the local knowledge that makes the day smoother).

AJ’s Ski & Sports and Pinnacle Ski & Sports are two go-to options for rentals and advice and Pinnacle offers guests of the Stoweflake Resort a 20% discount.

Pro tip: when you pick up your bike, ask the shop which trails are currently rideable—grooming and conditions change day to day.

Quick tips for a better ride (and better trail karma)

A few small habits can make your ride easier—and help keep trails in good shape for everyone:

  • Use proper fat tires (wider tires help prevent ruts).
  • Run low tire pressure—often well under 10 PSI—to “float” on snow instead of sinking.
  • Stick to the firmest packed line, and avoid riding in classic ski tracks.
  • Skip warm, soft conditions—if you’re leaving deep ruts, it’s time to call it and come back when it’s colder.
  • Respect closures and signage. The Stowe Trails Partnership (quoted by Stowe) is clear: ducking ropes and ignoring signs can jeopardize access.

A simple fat-bike “choose your own adventure” day

Option 1: The First-Timer Cruise

Start with the Stowe Recreation Path (adjacent to the Stoweflake Resort) for a confidence-building ride.

Finish with a hot drink in the village and a warm-up back at Stoweflake.

Option 2: The Classic Stowe Winter Ride

Grab a rental, check conditions, then head for Cady Hill or Edson Hill for a more “trail” feel.

This is the sweet spot for that winter-woods + flowy singletrack vibe.

Option 3: Scenic & Steady Miles

Explore a section of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail—a great pick if you want a longer outing with an easier grade.

Make it a Stoweflake winter tradition

Fat biking is one of those activities that’s easy to add to a winter getaway: it’s adventurous without being intimidating, and it gives you a whole new relationship with Stowe’s winter landscape. Add it as a rest-day activity between ski days—or make it the main event.

When you’re ready, check trail conditions, rent your ride, and go find your winter “two wheels” grin.
